Si te falta algo, te decimos cómo conseguirlo.Photo ID, Social Security card or ITIN for everyone on the return, your income forms (W-2, 1099), and if applicable: dependent documents, childcare expenses, 1095-A and a voided check for direct deposit. How the dates of a return fall in order.
No single due date works for every year, but the dates generally follow the same order. This outline is general: the IRS publishes the exact dates each year.

Ingresos y formulariosIncome and forms
Each employer gives you a W-2 that reports your wages. If you work for yourself — as a contractor, through an app or selling online — your income may arrive on a 1099-NEC, a 1099-MISC or a 1099-K, or on no form at all.
The difference matters: according to the IRS, people who work for themselves may owe self-employment tax, which covers Social Security and Medicare, on top of income tax.
It depends on how much. You generally have to file if your net self-employment earnings were $400 or more; with less, you may still have to file under other IRS rules. Net earnings are figured on Schedule SE from your business profit.
And if you expect to owe $1,000 or more when you file, the IRS generally expects estimated payments during the year.

The IRS asks you to file every return that is due, even if you cannot pay in full. What changes with time is the refund: to get a refund of withholding or estimated payments, a return generally has to be filed within 3 years of its due date.
If you do not file, the IRS may prepare a substitute return that may leave out deductions you are entitled to.
File anyway: filing and paying promptly limits interest and late-payment penalties. Depending on your case, you can ask the IRS for 60 to 120 extra days to pay, or for an installment agreement.
It is a 9-digit number the IRS issues to people who need a taxpayer identification number for federal taxes and cannot get a Social Security number; for example, to file a return or to be claimed as a spouse or dependent.
According to the IRS, it is for tax purposes only: it does not authorize work, does not change immigration status, and does not qualify you for Social Security benefits or the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).
If your ITIN has expired and you need to file a return, the IRS asks you to renew it. A renewed ITIN keeps its original assignment date.
Applications and renewals use Form W-7 with its supporting documents, by mail or in person.
Fechas y reembolsosDates and refunds
It depends on the tax year and your situation, so we do not give a one-size-fits-all date here. The IRS publishes each year’s dates: confirm them on IRS.gov for the year you are filing.
What is general: a tax year’s return is usually filed the following year (the 2025 tax year, in 2026). And if you work for yourself, estimated payments are split into four periods a year, each with its own due date.
According to IRS guidance for the 2025 tax year, most refunds are issued in under 21 days, and refunds that claim the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) cannot be issued before mid-February.
Timing is set by the IRS and depends on your return: it is not a promise from us. According to the IRS, an accurate past-due return takes about 6 weeks to process, and a refund may be held if other returns are past due.
Before filing, we explain the result and how your return will be filed.
If it is filed electronically, keep the self-select PIN you chose: the IRS lists it among the details to have on hand the following year.
No. No one can guarantee a refund or an outcome: it depends on your income, your documents and that year’s rules. Be wary of anyone who promises a bigger refund than other preparers can get.

The IRS recommends avoiding preparers who charge a percentage of your refund or offer to deposit all or part of your refund into their own accounts. It also warns against anyone who promises a bigger refund than other preparers can get.

Under IRS rules, every paid preparer must sign the return, include their PTIN and give you a copy. You review it before it is filed: even when someone else prepares it, you remain responsible for what it says.
