What is the difference between a W‑2 and a 1099?
A W-2 reports the wages an employer paid you. Forms 1099-NEC and 1099-K usually arrive when you were paid without being an employee: as a contractor, on your own or through an app. The difference changes how that income is reported and whether self-employment tax applies on top of income tax.
El formulario sale de cómo te pagaron. The form follows how you were paid.
The IRS calls them information returns. These are the ones most often mixed up.
Reports what you earned as an employee. If you had several employers during the year, you get a W-2 from each.
- 1099-NEC · pagos a no empleados1099-NEC · nonemployee pay
It usually goes to people who did work as a contractor or on their own.
- 1099-K · trabajo por aplicación1099-K · app-based work
For app-based work, the IRS notes you may receive a 1099-K, a 1099-MISC or even a W-2. That is why it pays to check every form that arrives.
- Otros 1099 · no son de trabajoOther 1099s · not about work
Not every 1099 is about work: a 1099-INT reports interest, a 1099-G unemployment and a 1099-R retirement payouts.
Dos caminos hacia la misma declaración.Two paths to the same return.
If you work for yourself, the income and expenses of that work are reported on Schedule C. The result is your net profit or loss.
Después, la ganancia o pérdida neta pasa a tu Formulario 1040, junto con tu salario si también tuviste W-2.Schedule SE uses that result to figure Social Security and Medicare tax. The net profit or loss then flows to your Form 1040, together with your wages if you also had a W-2.
The tax that only shows up when you work for yourself.
- Qué esWhat it is
Self-employment tax is the Social Security and Medicare tax of people who work for themselves. It is separate from income tax.
- Cuándo aplicaWhen it applies
Generally, when your net self-employment earnings are $400 or more.
- Cuánto esHow much

Lo que suele reunir cada uno. What each one usually gathers.
A form is not your only record. If you work for yourself, your statements and receipts count as much as a 1099.

As an employee, tax is withheld from your pay. If you think it will fall short, the IRS says you can raise your withholding with Form W-4.
Por tu cuenta: pagos estimadosOn your own: estimated payments
If you expect to owe $1,000 or more when you file, you generally have to make estimated payments. They cover income tax and self-employment tax.
Si tienes los dosIf you have both
With a job and side income, raising the withholding from your job is an alternative to estimated payments. Which suits you depends on your numbers.
